A Short History of FIFA

Football, just like any other sports, is governed by an international body that holds the registry of the different clubs and teams that are qualified to compete professionally around the world. This body is the International Federation of Association Football or FIFA. The FIFA holds international competitions to bring together the many football associations around the world.

FIFA was first established in 1904. The popularity of football outside the United Kingdom at the beginning of the 19th century prompted the establishment of a body that will overlook the international activities related to this game. The acronym’s meaning is French, since the first convention was held in Paris. However, the headquarters later on moved to Zurich, Switzerland since it is considered a neutral country making it ideal for headquarters of international bodies.

To date, there are over 200 nations and associations that have teams listed under the registry of the FIFA.
