National Football Conference
As mentioned above, the National Football Conference is the other main counterpart of AFC under the United States’ most prestigious football league, the NFL. When the merger was made, the NFC had thirteen teams with all teams having played for the NFL. Out of the five alignment plans for the NFC, Plan 3 was picked out of a glass bowl.

- Eastern - Dallas, New York Giants, Philadelphia, St. Louis Cardinals, Washington
- Central - Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, Minnesota
- Western - Atlanta, Los Angeles Rams, New Orleans, San Francisco
Like the American Football League, NFC has also four divisions namely East, North, South and West Division.

East Division
The following teams are the members of NFC’s East Division:
a. Dallas Cowboys – considered the most valuable sports franchise in the United States according to Forbes magazine, this team is based in Dallas Arlington, Texas.

b. New York Giants – this team ranks third among all NFL franchises and is based in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

c. Philadelphia Eagles – this team have won three NFL titles but have lost two Super Bowl Championships in 1980 and 2004 to Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots respectively.

d.Washington Redskins – home games are played at the famous Jack Kent Cooke Stadium also known as the FedExField football stadium in Landover, Maryland and is ranked the second most valuable franchise in the NFL.

North Division
The member teams of NFC’s North Division:
a. Chicago Bears – this team is based in Chicago Illinois and have won nine Professional American Football league championships.

d. Minnesota Vikings – this team was founded in 1961 after the group of owners withdrew membership to the AFL. It is now based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

South Division
The South Division of NFC consists of:
a. Atlanta Falcons – this team joined NFL as an expansion team in 1965 and is based in Atlanta, Georgia.

b. Carolina Panthers – this team represents both the North and South Carolina and is based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

c. New Orleans Saints – founded in 1967 as an expansion team, the team now plays home games in Louisiana Superdome.

d. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – together with the Seattle Seahawks, this team joined the NFL as expansion teams in 1976. The Bucs as they are fondly called, are based in Tampa, Florida.

West Division
Below are the teams under the West Division of the National Football Conference:
a. Arizona Cardinals – holds the position of oldest run professional football club in the United States since it was founded in the year 1898 and is presently based in Glendale, Arizona.

b. St. Louis Rams – this team has already won one Super Bowl and two NFL Championships and is based in St. Louis, Missouri.

c. San Francisco 49ers – home games are played in San Francisco, California and they hold the record to have won five Super Bowls.

d. Seattle Seahawks – this is the only team which have played in both the AFC and NFC Championship Games. They are based in Seattle, Washington and had only one Super Bowl appearance so far.
