American Football Conference

After the NFL merged with the American Football League, the American Football Conference (AFC) was subsequently formed. Five expansion teams have joined the merger while two have left making the teams 16 in all. The present 16 AFC teams are divided into four divisions namely East, North, South and West Division. Each of the division has four member teams and are required to play against each of the teams within the division. At the end of the football season, play off games are organized which is a competition between the four top team in every division with two wild card entry teams. Below are the different divisions with their respective member teams.

East Division

The East Division of the AFC is primarily composed of the following teams:

a. Buffalo Bills – professional football team that is based on the metropolitan area of Buffalo, New York.

b. Miami Dolphins – for this team, the home games are played at Dolphin Stadium in the Miami Gardens.

c. New England Patriots – the “Pats” as they are fondly called by sports writers, practice football at their home stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts .

d. New York Jets – this Eastern Division team practise their home games at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

North Division

The North Division for the AFC consists of the teams:

a. Baltimore Ravens – this North Division team has already won a number of games including a Super Bowl title, Super Bowl XXXV and the 2000 Season.

b. Cincinnati Bengals – as the name of the team suggests, their home base is in Cincinnati, Ohio. This team conducts summer training camp in Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky.

c. Cleveland Browns – this team was established in 1946 as a charter member of the All American Football Conference (AAFC)

d. Pittsburgh Steelers – this team has already won 6 Super Bowl titles, seven AFC Championship Games and has hosted ten conference championship games.

South Division

The South Division of the AFC is compose of the following teams:

a. Houston Texans – this team joined the NFL in 2002 after the Houston’s previous franchise.

b. Indianapolis Colts – this team have already won five NFL Championships which include two Super Bowl titles with the most recent in 2006 against the Chicago Bears. The Colts is the first team in NFL history which won 12 games or more in six consecutive seasons.

c. Jacksonville Jaguars – this team’s home base is located in Jacksonville, Florida and joined the league as an expansion team in 1995.

d. Tennessee Titans – this AFC team is based in Nashville, Tennessee and was originally named Tennessee Oilers before the change in 1999.

West Division

The teams in AFC’s West Division are:

a. Denver Broncos – this team play home games at Invesco Field at Mile High and is based in Denver, Colorado. They began to play as a charter member of AFL and joined the present NFL as part of the merger.

b. Kansas City Chiefs – originally named the Dallas Texans, this team is now presently based in Kansas City, Missouri.

c. Oakland Raiders – originally a member of the AFL where they won one Championship and three division titles, they are now an active member of the AFL based in Oakland, California.
